Dear Colleagues,
Here below attached is a message regarding a PhD studentship offer specifically for Chinese students. The topic is " First ground based FTIR-TCCON measurements of CO2 in a European megacity (Paris)" in the framework of the international observation network TCCON. The PhD research will be performed at University of Paris 6 (UPMC).
Please pass on to any bright and motivated students looking for a PhD in this domain.
For any detailed information please contact directly either Dr. Yao TE (yao-veng.te@upmc.fr ) or Dr. Christof Janssen (christof.janssen@upmc.fr ).
PhD studentship offer
To whom it may concern,
In 2015, the LERMA (Laboratoire d'Etudes du Rayonnement et de la Matière en Astrophysique et Atmosphères) will install the first TCCON instrument (TCCON-Paris) in a European megacity. It will be located in the center of Paris on the campus of Sorbonnes Universités/UPMC. Being the second largest European megacity, the Paris urban area is a privileged place for studying urban CO2 emissions. The TCCON-Paris site will therefore provide an essential contribution to the validation of actual and future satellite missions, which are dedicated to globally quantify sources (ie including hot spots, such as the Paris area) and sinks of greenhouse gases (GOSAT, OCO-2, CarbonSat, MicroCarb, …).
The aim of the PhD thesis, which is part of the open calls for a CSC scholarship (China Scholarship Council), is to improve and ensure a high level of measurement precision and to establish observation strategy and analysis protocol for satellite and ground-based measurements in order to precisely quantify megacity-CO2 from space. The candidate will be trained in the analysis of ground-based FTIR measurements and in the use of satellite data. The thesis is part of a larger international collaboration (France, Germany, US) and visits at the partner institutions are encouraged during the time of the stay.
Please use the following link for obtaining more details on the thesis, entitled "First ground based FTIR-TCCON measurements of CO2 in a European megacity: comparison with a rural site and validation of satellite measurements" (no CSC2015_ED564_05).

If you know students with great potential who are interested and motivated in preparing an ambitious PhD on CO2 in Paris, please encourage them to contact either me (yao-veng.te@upmc.fr ) or Christof (christof.janssen@upmc.fr ). The PhD will start in September 2015. In order to obtain funding, several steps need to be taken on both the French and the Chinese sides. The first deadline for taking contact and filling out the application form is February 28, 2015.
